Favorite Family Read-Alouds (The Books We Still Talk About)
There is something so special about snuggling up together, pulling out a good book, and stepping into worlds of imagination together.
As a Christian family, the books we bring into our home matter to us. While not every book on this list is explicitly Christian, these are books that we’ve personally enjoyed and felt good about sharing with our kids—stories that are wholesome, age-appropriate, rich in imagination, and free from content that felt inappropriate or at odds with the values we’re trying to cultivate in our home.
These are the stories your kids beg for one more chapter of. The ones that spark conversations at dinner, create inside jokes, inspire imaginative play, and become memories you reference years later.
Most of these were read when my boys were roughly ages 4–8 (though reading readiness and interests vary!), and this list isn’t meant to be exhaustive—I’ll continue updating it as we find more treasures!
I’ve separated this into two categories:

A Bear Called Paddington
Recommended age: 4–8+
A darling book (series) following the adventures of the most endearing bear from Peru living with the Brown family in London. Cozy, charming, and one of those reads that created lots of laughter and sweet family memories.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
Recommended age: 5–9+
Charlie Bucket’s unforgettable trip through Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory made for a wildly imaginative and entertaining read-aloud filled with anticipation and memorable moments. There were giggles, mouths watering, and lots of pleas for one more chapter!

The Dreamer
Recommended age: 6–10+
When 10-year-old Jason and his younger brother, Fred, discover a board game that transports them to countries across the globe, they also learn what it means to deliver a Bible in a country where Christianity is illegal. This one sparked remarkable conversations with my kids about Christianity aroud the world, missionaries, martyrs and the importance of sharing the gospel.
Little Pilgrim’s Big Journey
Recommended age: 3–9+
A wonderful introduction to Pilgrim’s Progress for younger readers, with questions at the end of each chapter to encourage further discussion and understanding. We have read this one multiple times as a family, and it is one of my favorite books ever. It brings me to tears and always captures my kids’ attention. I’ve even read it successfully with children as young as 3!

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe
Recommended age: 5–9+
A timeless adventure into Narnia filled with wonder, memorable characters, and meaningful themes that make for an especially rich read-aloud experience. An all-time favorite of mine as a child and a true delight to share this with my children. P.S. you can order Turkish Delight on Amazon 😉

The Hobbit
This was one my husband especially wanted to read with our boys because it has been such a favorite of his. Unsurprisingly, our boys absolutely loved it too. Between the adventure, dwarves, trolls, riddles, and the excitement of Bilbo’s journey, there was so much imaginative play inspired by this one. My husband even ordered a special ring that he would bring out during reading time—which completely mesmerized the kids and made the whole experience feel magical.

Honestly, this was very hard to divide into two sections. On another day, several of the books below could easily end up in the “favorite” category. These are all stories I’d feel excited to put into a family’s hands, and I wouldn’t be surprised if some of them become your family’s favorites too.
The Reluctant Dragon
Ages 5–9
A humorous classic about a peaceful, poetry-loving dragon who would much rather not fight anyone—and the boy who helps him prove it. This one had lots of clever dialogue and ended up being full of chuckles.
The Adventures of Bo & Mr. Quillery
Ages 5-9
An imaginative adventure with memorable characters and lots to enjoy together aloud.
The Green Ember
Ages 7–12
An adventurous fantasy following rabbit siblings who are pulled into a larger story of resistance, loyalty, and survival in a world under threat. Full of battles, bravery, and characters kids really root for.
Little House on the Prairie
Ages 6–10+
A frontier story that brings daily life on the American prairie to life—simple routines, hard work, changing seasons, and the realities of building a home in a new land—in a beloved series that has been a favorite for generations for good reason.
Winnie-the-Pooh
Ages 4-8
The gentle humor and short, character-driven stories make this especially well-suited for read-aloud time with younger kids. There’s a calm, unhurried rhythm to the writing that encourages listening closely, and the subtle humor tends to land in unexpected, memorable ways. I just love Pooh!
The Mansoul Chronicles (Books 1 & 2)
Ages 6–10+
A Christian allegory inspired by Bunyan-style storytelling that portrays a “city” (Mansoul) being attacked, captured, and ultimately restored. We read the first book in one sitting right after it arrived because the story immediately pulled us in. It naturally leads to gospel conversations in such a powerful way.

Mr. Popper’s Penguins
Ages 5–9
Lighthearted, funny, and full of absurd moments that make it especially enjoyable aloud. Perfect for a winter read and responsible for my oldest son choosing a penguin as his favorite animal.
Heartwood Hotel Series
Ages 5–8
A cozy woodland series following Mona the mouse and the guests of Heartwood Hotel. These books feel like a warm blanket: adventure, memorable animal characters, and lots of themes of friendship, belonging, and finding home.
The Wild Robot
Ages 5–10
A story about a robot unexpectedly raising a gosling in the wilderness sounds unusual—but somehow it works. Full of adventure, heart, and questions about belonging, family, and what makes someone feel at home.
The Hunt for the Kraken
Ages 6–10+
A choose-your-own-adventure style story set at sea where readers make decisions that shape the direction of the journey. Full of exploration, danger, and mystery—with multiple endings depending on the choices you make—this one feels especially fun to experience together aloud.
The Oregon Trail
Ages 6–10+
For those of us who grew up playing the computer game, this one brings back all the nostalgia. Readers make choices throughout the story—with twenty-two possible endings depending on the path you take—which makes it especially fun and interactive. A great way to experience the adventure, unpredictability, and challenges of life on the trail.
The Secret of the Hidden Scrolls
Ages 5–8
A great first chapter book series for younger listeners that combines time-travel adventure with biblical stories. Short chapters, lots of momentum, and just enough excitement to keep kids eager for the next chapter.
A Lion to Guard Us
Ages 7–11
A historical adventure following three siblings traveling from England to the New World to reunite with their father. Full of courage, uncertainty, and resilience, this one gives kids a window into another time while still feeling very readable and engaging.
The Boxcar Children
Ages 5–9
There’s a reason this series has lasted for generations. Siblings solving mysteries, living independently, and turning ordinary situations into adventures—it’s approachable, engaging, and especially fun for kids who are ready to move into longer chapter books.
Island of Stars
Ages 7–12
A beautifully written middle-grade adventure filled with mystery and adventure. I absolutely loved this one and can easily imagine it becoming a memorable family read-aloud, especially for families with slightly older kids.
The Best Christmas Pageant Ever
Ages 5–10
A charming and funny Christmas classic that has been making families laugh for generations. The Herdman kids may be the "worst kids in the world," but their unexpected encounter with the Christmas story makes for a surprisingly heartfelt ending. This is great for family conversations about “who” Jesus came for and for a great Christmas movie night after reading the book.
