Why Teach Your Children About the Armor of God?
The Armor of God is one of the most engaging passages of Scripture to teach children—and for good reason. The imagery of armor, shields, swords, and battle helps kids visualize the spiritual truths Paul is communicating in Ephesians 6. In my all-boy household, the idea of armor is especially thrilling and intriguing, making it a wonderful opportunity to capture their attention while pointing them to something far greater: how God equips His people.
But the Armor of God is about much more than a fun picture of a soldier. It teaches our children an essential truth: God has not left us to face life's challenges on our own. Ephesians 6:11 reminds us to “put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.”
This truth is especially important in a world where our children are constantly surrounded by messages that contradict God’s Word. Scripture reminds us that our battle is not ultimately “against flesh and blood, but against...the spiritual forces of evil” (Ephesians 6:12). God has lovingly provided what we need to stand firm—His truth, righteousness, peace, faith, salvation, and His Word.
Teaching our children about the Armor of God from a young age helps them recognize that faith is not just something we learn about on Sundays. It is something we live out every day. As families, we have the opportunity to remind our children that when they face fear, temptation, discouragement, or difficult situations, God has equipped them and is with them.

The Dragon Slayer and His Super Special Suit by Kyle Worley
This picture book is a favorite in our home! While it is not a direct teaching of the Armor of God, it beautifully communicates these truths through allegory. It retells the gospel story while introducing children to the idea of spiritual armor and the reality that God equips us for the battles we face. My kids ask for this one on repeat, and I love the deep truths it communicates in such a memorable way.
Best for: Preschool and early elementary ages, family read-alouds
The Mansoul Chronicles Books 1 & 2 by Tyler Van Halteren (Lithos Kids)
These books are based on John Bunyan’s The Holy War and have been fully illustrated and adapted for children ages 6–12. They tell an epic allegorical story about the battle for the human heart and mind, showing how Diabolus deceives the city of Mansoul through subtle schemes and lies.
While these books are not a direct study of the Armor of God, they naturally open the door for conversations about spiritual warfare, recognizing Satan’s tactics, and the importance of standing firm in God’s truth. These have been huge favorites in our home and are such a powerful way to introduce kids to these biblical concepts through story.

God’s Big Armor by Allison Key Bemiss
This sweet, simple book is a wonderful introduction to the Armor of God for toddlers and preschoolers. Through playful language, engaging illustrations, and interactive elements, it helps little ones begin learning about the armor described in Ephesians 6 in a way they can understand and remember.

Do Right Bible Study (Not Consumed Ministries)
Not Consumed Kids Bible studies are some of my favorite hands-on Bible studies to do with my kids. We typically work through at least one (and often a couple!) each summer, and they have always been wonderful resources for helping our kids engage with Scripture in a meaningful way.
Do Right is a 20-lesson Bible study through Ephesians 6 that teaches kids how to use the Armor of God to stand against temptation and make wise choices. The Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis
While The Screwtape Letters isn't a typical Armor of God book, I couldn't leave it off this list because it has significantly impacted my understanding of spiritual warfare. Through a series of fictional letters from a senior demon to a junior tempter, C.S. Lewis offers a compelling picture of the subtle ways Satan seeks to distract, discourage, deceive, and tempt believers.
Reading this book helped me better understand the need to put on the full armor of God. Satan's schemes are often far more subtle than we expect, making it all the more important that we are grounded in God's truth, protected by His righteousness, and equipped with His Word. If you're looking for a book that will deepen your understanding of the spiritual battle described in Ephesians 6, this is one I highly recommend.
