Early readers are beginning to gain confidence and independence, which makes finding the right books especially important. In this section, you’ll find engaging chapter books, illustrated readers, and stories that help build reading momentum without overwhelming new readers. And I include some picture books too, because just because they are starting early readers and chapter books, doesn’t mean they’ve graduated from picture books! Inside the full PDF, I’ve included additional favorites that are fun, wholesome, and highly rereadable.
Heartwood Hotel: Home Again by Kallie George
A warm and comforting animal story with friendship, adventure, and cozy woodland charm. Great for younger readers ready to settle into longer chapter books this summer. (This is book 4 of 5 in the series!)
The Hundred Dresses by Eleanor Estes
A timeless story about kindness, empathy, and the impact of our words. Short enough for summer reading but meaningful enough to spark great conversations.
For Ages 8-12
Middle grade years are often where lifelong readers are made, and honestly, as an adult, I absolutely love books in this genre! Kids this age are ready for richer stories, memorable adventures, deeper themes, and characters they can truly connect with. This section includes clean, captivating books for independent readers, while the full guide expands with even more historical fiction, fantasy, realistic fiction, and family-approved favorites.

In the full guide, you’ll find even more wholesome fiction picks ranging from historical fiction to lighter contemporary reads and immersive page-turners.
Theo of Golden by Allen Levi
One of my favorite reads this year. A mysterious stranger arrives in the town of Golden and begins buying portrait drawings of local residents then returning them to each person in exchange for their life story. It’s a quiet, reflective novel about generosity and how words of encouragement and truly valuing others can change a life.
Stepping Heavenward by Elizabeth Prentiss
Written as the fictional journal of a young woman beginning her adult life in the 1800s, this classic follows her journey through love, marriage, motherhood, grief, and spiritual growth.
